• motivate yourself; you can’t motivate others
• focus upon the strength of others 
• good habits are hard to develop but easy to live with; bad habits are hard to break but easy to develop
• it takes 27 consecutive days to create a new habit
• space weakens group
• learn from other people’s mistakes
• do not evaluate while you learn
• one has to be persistent to be successful
• “ok” leaders go for “what”, good leaders go for “how”, master leaders go for “why”
• you have to break out of your comfort zone in order to find the magic
• you’re only worth what you do
• people are more important than your title
• 90% of leadership effectiveness is based on attitude
• you can’t lead others until you lead yourself
• you’re measured by what you give
• you can only give what you have
• maturity is the ability to understand how one’s own behavior affect other people
• act like you want to be, and you’ll be like you want to act
• choose to understand before being understood
• whatever you want is what you give away

6 levels of learning

1. person learns some of required material
2. person learns all of the required material
3. person learns more than required material
4. person learns by watching
5. person that goes out and create his own material

• you’re at your best when things are at their worst
• if the band looks good, you look great; if the band looks bad, you look worse
• you are always on stage as a drum major
• effectiveness is made up of 7% words, 35% tone, 55% body language (you can never be at 100%)
• if you act something long enough, it becomes a reality
• prove that you are the best person for the job
• develop a personality
• be in it with them
• realize that band members/friends have differing priorities

4 things you can do in an unpleasant situation

1. change it
2. accept it
3. quit
4. complain

• don’t allow yourself to choose your friends based on popularity
• support people before they’ve demonstrated their support to you
• dedicate yourself to being a great teacher (get people’s attention)
• the most important thing a teacher needs to do is getting their response
• people learn more in the presence of joy than any other emotion
• be a teacher, not a screamer
• don’t ever give up on anyone
• avoid confrontation on the field
• it’s not you, it’s the position
